White Boat Tour and Admiral’s Circle Inaugural Event
Pearl Harbor White Boat Tour
Before the sun rose, members, donors and volunteers gathered at the entrance World War II Valor in the Pacific Park to kick off the 68th anniversary of the USS Missouri BB-63’s launching from Brooklyn Naval Shipyard and the 13th anniversary of the USS Missouri Memorial Association’s grand opening of the Battleship Missouri Memorial’s to the public. A special White Boat tour was arranged through the Navy and narrated by our very own Curator, Mike Weidenbach. Weidenbach wove his dialog with past stories and present day accounts emphasizing Pearl Harbor’s cultural and historical significance and how the Battleship Missouri is the element that completes the story of Pearl Harbor today. After disembarking at Ford Island, everyone gathered for a Volunteer Recognition Program and took part in activities on the fantail.

Expanding S.T.E.M. Education Programs
We were pleased to announce that St. Louis, Missouri.-based Monsanto Fund presented a $20,000 check to the USS Missouri Memorial Association, in support of expanding the memorial’s science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) educational programs. The fund is the philanthropic arm of Monsanto Company, which has operations in Hawaii on Maui, Molokai and Oahu.
Youth who participate in STEM programs aboard the Battleship Missouri leave with knowledge of real-world applications in STEM principles, a greater sense of history and an understanding of life at sea. Support from Monsanto will further development of program curriculum, which already includes robotics, digital media and computer-aided design. The grant will fund staff training and acquisition of educational material for new programs focusing on weather, navigation, mass density, buoyancy, magnetism and electricity.
A portion of the funds from Monsanto will also be allocated to the development of the Missouri’s forthcoming mentorship program. Currently in development, the program will provide apprentice opportunities with the memorial’s partners and expanded scholarly depth.
We are fortunate to have great partners in the community like Monsanto who value the continuation and expansion of STEM programs. Our education department is committed to providing fun and educational experiences for students. More than 11,000 students each year participate in the memorial’s educational programs, including its overnight encampment experience. School groups have the opportunity to learn more about the USS Missouri’s role in World War II, the Korean War, Operation Desert Storm, and as an interactive, historic attraction and memorial.

38th USS MISSOURI (BB-63) ASSOCIATION CREW MEMBER REUNION
Each year, the USS Missouri (BB-63) Association conducts an annual reunion in various cities across the nation. This year’s reunion and was held in Mesa, Arizona. Crew members, their spouses, children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren took part in the various activities.

These included a visit to the Superstition Mountains with a steamboat ride, viewing of USS Arizona artifacts at the Arizona State Capitol, and holding a very moving memorial service in honor of shipmates who have “gone to the deep,” as well as reflection and moment of silence to honor and remember those citizens who lost their lives during the September 11th attacks.

Also on hand were representatives of the Battleship Missouri Memorial (aka USS Missouri Memorial Association): Mike Weidenbach (Curator) and Michelle Morihara (Development Manager). Weidenbach and Morihara had many opportunities to talk with attendees regarding recent projects and future plans at the memorial. They extended their thanks to both the USS Missouri (BB-63) Association for its generous contribution toward continued works at the memorial, along with thanks to families who also give gifts directly to the memorial.
The USS Missouri (BB-63) Association was formed in 1974 to promote ties among former shipmates (both U.S. Navy and Marine Corps) who served aboard the USS Missouri. Former crew interested in learning more about becoming a member and locating fellow shipmates can visit http://bb63vets.com/. Former crew members are also encouraged to be recognized for their service aboard the Missouri by registering with the Navy at http://www.navylog.org/. Registration is free and creates a lasting legacy of honor that reaches across generations.

The Battleship Missouri Memorial is operated by the USS Missouri Memorial Association, Inc., a separate, Hawaii-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and relies on donations to support the various education programs and preservation projects in fulfillment of its mission: to create and maintain a fitting memorial to the people and historic events reflecting our nation’s legacy of duty, honor, strength, resolve and sacrifice. To learn more about how to support the memorial, visit http://www.ussmissouri.org/.

The Battleship Missouri shows support
The Battleship Missouri Memorial is not letting a mere half an ocean and half a continent keep it from showing support for the people of the State of Missouri, recently impacted by devastating tornados.
Contributions totaling no less than $3,000 from memorial’s board of directors, staff and visitors will be donated toward the Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri to aid disaster relief efforts.
The May 23 tornado that struck Joplin was the deadliest in the history of the United States, claiming 116 lives, injuring more than 500 and causing millions of dollars in damages. The three-quarter-mile-wide tornado ravished nearly a third of the city of Joplin, Missouri; knocking out power and damaging water treatment and sewage plants. When the storm had passed many were left without food or shelter.
Our thoughts continue to be with the people of Joplin and other impacted areas of Missouri. The people of Missouri have shown tremendous spirit and determination in rebuilding their communities. We hope our modest gift will help aid them in the challenges that remain ahead.

Two Generations of Mighty Mo crew members Unite
The Battleship Missouri Memorial and the USS Missouri (BB-63) Association crew members organization jointly marked the 25th anniversary of the Mighty Mo’s second commissioning on May 10 with a ceremony aboard the ship’s fantail.
Mention of the Battleship Missouri may conjure images of World War II and the Korean War. But on May 10, 1986, after more than 30 years in mothball, the Missouri was modernized and recommissioned to join President Ronald Reagan’s 600-ship fleet. Thusly, there is an entirely different generation of battleship Sailors who can claim themselves as USS Missouri veterans — and therefore the last generation of battleship sailors.
The ceremony featured keynote speaker CAPT Kenneth S. Jordan, (Ret.) USN, the former executive officer (XO) of the USS Missouri (BB-63) during the ship’s final years prior to her second and final decommissioning in 1992. Remarks were also provided by CAPT Richard Kitchens, USN, Commander, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam; and VADM Robert K.U. Kihune, (Ret.) USN, chairman of the USS Missouri Memorial Association.
The event provided a unique opportunity to recognize a more recent era of veterans who so honorably defended freedom in Operation Desert Storm and other operations throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Many of these veterans continue to serve our country today.
It was a little over a year ago, at the last reunion of former USS Missouri (BB-63) crew held in Chicago by the USS Missouri (BB-63) Association, that there was concern that the 30-year gap between 1st commissioning crew and 2nd commissioning crew could mean the end of the original crew members organization and a disconnection from the full history and legacy of the Mighty Mo.
Last month, all concerns were put to rest as the crew came together as one, dedicated to preserving the proud legacy of service aboard “America’s last battleship.”
In a moving and often humorous speech, David Ysaquirre, president of the Long Beach chapter of the USS Missouri (BB-63) Association, spoke eloquently about what it has meant to him to serve aboard the Missouri and now to be a veteran crew member of the ship. He then invited Jack Stempick, president of the original USS Missouri (BB-63) Association, to join him on stage in a symbolic "change of command" and turned over the membership of the 2nd commissioning crew.
Ysaquirre also made a point to acknowledge the USS Missouri Memorial Association for the “exceptional care” given to their vessel and to the outstanding job in welcoming the veterans aboard and honoring them with the 25th anniversary ceremony. This mention was met with cheers and rousing applause.

Mighty Mo’s Defenses Receive .50-Caliber Boost
On Nov. 3, the Battleship Missouri Memorial’s “defenses” received a boost in the form of eight .50-caliber machine guns mounted on the perimeter of the historic ship’s main deck. They are the result of a donation of the hardware from the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Crane, Indiana.
Operated by Marines stationed aboard the USS Missouri (BB-63) in the 1980s and early 1990s, the machine guns are a reminder of a time when formal Marine Detachments (MARDETs) served on Navy ships as dedicated units.
The story behind the installation of the .50-caliber machine guns (M2HB Mod) goes back more than a year, to a visit by Indiana-resident, Tim Barker. At the time, the Missouri sported a single .50-caliber machine gun on her bow. Barker, who happened to be a gun mount specialist for military contractor SAIC, noticed the gun and its mount were not the right type that would have stood sentry on the ship. Luckily, Barker knew where he could get his hands on not just one but eight — his workplace at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Crane.
Barker, joined by SAIC gun mounts project leader Dennis Trump, pitched NSWC Crane Weapons Repair Department manager Gary Mesarosh to “de-mil” and donate the eight guns, which were no longer in use, to the non-profit Battleship Missouri Memorial. With persistence and additional help from NSWC Crane project manager Nick Crist, the guns and their appropriate mounts (MK 26 Mod 17) are now installed, significantly enhancing the onboard Mighty Mo experience. Although not equipped with ammunition, the machine guns give visitors the opportunity for some hands-on practice, targeting phantom enemies on and around Pearl Harbor’s Ford Island.
Barker personally performed the installation, assisted by Battleship Missouri Memorial deck maintenance technician Roger Terwey and curator Mike Weidenbach.
“It’s inspiring to see the Battleship Missouri so well preserved for future generations,” Trump said. “It is equally rewarding to know that NSWC Crane could contribute to restoring this important part of the Mighty Mo’s armament history. In a way, through the donated .50-caliber guns, our team is symbolically standing guard on her decks to protect the Missouri as she, in-turn, stands perpetual watch over her fallen comrade, the USS Arizona, just a thousand feet away.”

Battleship Missouri Sets Course for St. Louis
The State of Missouri will be visited in July by its most famous and newest namesakes afloat — at least in spirit — when the USS Missouri Memorial Association and the USS Missouri SSN-780 Commissioning Committee partner with the Saint Louis Science Center and St. Louis Navy League to present “An Evening of Aloha with the Mighty Mo,” featuring keynote speaker, Air Force General Duncan J. McNabb, commander of U.S. Transportation Command.
The benefit event will be held on Thursday, July 22, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Saint Louis Science Center’s James S. McDonnell Planetarium. An earlier, private reception beginning at 4:30 p.m. will feature a rare exhibition of the battleship USS Missouri (BB-63) silver collection, on loan from the Governor of Missouri’s mansion. Live and silent auctions will also be held.
General McNabb will offer remarks emphasizing the importance of American ingenuity in our nation’s past, present and future, and acknowledge its role in creating technological and engineering marvels like the two naval namesakes. The USS Missouri (BB-63), America’s last battleship, launched in the midst of World War II, served as the site of Imperial Japan’s formal surrender, and later fought in support of American troops in the Korean War and helped to Liberate Kuwait in Operation Desert Storm. The USS Missouri (SSN-780) will be the seventh Virginia-class attack submarine and the fifth ship in the United States Navy named in honor of the state.
Our four organizations are working together to create extraordinary educational opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math for students and educators across the greater Saint Louis region and beyond. We share a common vision of elevating youth scholarship and educational experiences to a new level. We are unified in the belief that educational experiences that utilizing these two vessels will carry forth an appreciation of their legacies while empowering future generations with real-life examples and role models to help them meet their dreams and aspirations.
Funds generated by table sponsorship and event night activities will be directed to support collaborative efforts dedicated to the development of education programs that specifically benefit students and educators of Missouri.

By all accounts, the drydocking of the Battleship Missouri was a success, completed within budget and on time. We are grateful to have the expertise and resources to drydock the Missouri in Hawaii, thanks to BAE Systems and Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, as well as our dedicated staff and volunteers. We enlisted a dream team worthy of a national treasure like the Missouri.
Mighty Mo supporters like you represent the tens of thousands of individual contributions that our memorial has received over the last eleven years. You are the foundation on which we launched and successfully completed a major engineering challenge as large as drydocking an 887-foot, 65-year-old battleship.
With your support, we are honored to accept the ongoing challenge of caring for America’s “mightiest” treasure. We are honored to once again be welcoming visitors, student groups, veterans and military ceremonies each day. And we are looking forward to our upcoming commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II this summer on Sept. 2, 2010.
Watch for updates in future issues of Broadside!

November 2009 - “Film on the Fantail” on Track in December
Drydocking is not preventing the Battleship Missouri Memorial from having its quarterly “Friends and Film on the Fantail” event. With the help of another Pearl Harbor historic site on Ford Island, our next feature presentation will be held at the Pacific Aviation Museum on Saturday, Dec. 5, starting at 6 p.m.
The featured film is “Polar Express,” the story of a young boy who on Christmas Eve boards a powerful magical train headed to the North Pole — home to Santa Claus, of course. What unfolds is an adventure of a skeptical boy who takes an extraordinary journey of self-discovery. He eventually learns that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe. (Rated PG)

October 2009 - Join a Prestigious Circle
Ever wanted to ride on a battleship? It’s not too late! Join the prestigious Golden Rivet Circle, established to recognize individuals and organizations who donate $500 or more throughout 2009, our 10th anniversary as a memorial and the year the Missouri goes into drydock.
Members of the Golden Rivet Circle will receive free lifetime admission, an exclusive membership card, a special keepsake, and the opportunity to ride the ship when she exits drydock and is towed back to Battleship Row!
We created the Golden Rivet Circle to show our appreciation to those who choose to contribute to our continued efforts in this crucial year. As a non-profit organization, we rely on the generosity of individuals to help support our mission to honor and preserve the legacy of this historic ship and her legendary crew. The Missouri’s hull is held together by thousands of rivets. Like so, donor contributions are an essential component to the success of the Battleship Missouri Memorial.
While industrial-level work is being funded by multiple sources, contributions by Golden Rivet Circle members will directly fund the continued refurbishment and re-opening of additional areas of the ship to visitor tours and educational programs.

July 2009 - Preservation Is Made Possible by Individuals Like You
Following the 65th anniversary of D-Day last month, the Battleship Missouri Memorial was prominently featured in the newest episode of the History Channel’s “Life After People” series.
“Life After People” is a series speculating what Earth would be like if humans were no longer present. In this episode, titled “Armed and Defenseless,” producers visually portrayed the fate of mankind’s machinery of war without human intervention. While the show admittedly takes hypothetical scenarios to the extreme, the episode demonstrated how crucial a role our ongoing preservation plays in safeguarding Missouri from the ravages of time and the elements.
Over the next several months, please stay tuned for several opportunities available to all individuals to do your part in preserving Missouri for future generations.

June 2009 - National Feasibility Study Results
Last summer a national feasibility was conducted to test the readiness for the organization to launch a capital campaign to raise $25 million dollars to support a vision for the future development of the Battleship Missouri Memorial. The Alford Group of Seattle Washington was designated the feasibility study consultant to perform the methodology and interview meetings with 40 national and local funders, voluteers, key staff, and community leaders. The feasibilty study committee which reviewed results was comprised of 10 people and co-chaired by Missouri State Senator John Loudon, and UMMA Board Treasurer Pat McFadden. The committee met three times through the study period to discuss results of interviews and foward a recommendation after analysis in six key areas: Organizational Image, Funding Priorities or Project Appeal, Leadership, Financial Support, Internal Readiness, and Climate & Timing. The Board Development Committee and the Board of Directors accepted the recommendations and key findings. The Battleship Missouri Memorial is focused on developing the study results including 1) developing the case for support to define use of fund and specific funding priorities, 2) designing a comprehensive donor cultivation calendar across programs and funding priorites, and 3) growing and developing leadership before initiating a capital campaign.

April 2009 - Tawani Foundations Donates $10,000 to Battleship Missouri
The Battleship Missouri Memorial recently received a $10,000 grant from the Chicago-based Tawani Foundation toward the completion of the historic ship’s Dental Clinic Restoration Project. Foundation Executive Director Ed Tracy and his wife, Denise McGowan, toured the Battleship Missouri on Feb. 11 during a visit to Pearl Harbor. Pictured are Mr. Tracy with his wife, Denise McGowan (left), and Ashley Bedingfield, Battleship Missouri Memorial grants management program assistant.
As part of the Dental Clinic Restoration Project, the memorial refurbished the dental office, X-ray facility, prosthetics lab, dental supply room, enlisted medical/dental berthing and two operatories to accurately portray the Dental Clinic’s operational environment, circa 1991, the period of time in which the USS Missouri participated in Operation Desert Storm.
With the support of organizations like the Tawani Foundation, the Battleship Missouri Memorial was able to launch its new Dental Health Education Program in February, which was National Children’s Dental Health Month. The education program is a powerful new initiative designed to educate youth about dental health. It incorporates the Dental Clinic and the influence that the Navy Dental Corps had on dental health around the world.
March 2009 - Join the Exclusive “Golden Rivet Circle”
The Missouri’s hull is held together by thousands of rivets. No one rivet is more important than the rest, and each piece plays its part in holding the ship together. Like rivets, donor contributions are an essential component to the success of the Battleship Missouri Memorial.
The Golden Rivet Circle has been established to recognize individuals and organizations who donate $500 or more throughout 2009, our 10th anniversary year, as preparations are made to drydock the Battleship Missouri later this year. Members of the Golden Rivet Circle will receive free lifetime admission, an exclusive membership card and a special keepsake.
We created the Golden Rivet Circle to show our appreciation to those who choose to contribute to our continued efforts in this crucial year. As a non-profit organization, we rely on the generosity of individuals to help support our mission to honor and preserve the legacy of this historic ship and her legendary crew.
While industrial-level work is being funded by multiple sources, contributions by Golden Rivet Circle members will directly fund the continued refurbishment and re-opening of additional areas of the ship to visitor tours and educational programs.
For more information, contact our Development Department at (808) 455-1600, ext. 244, or e-mail development@ussmissouri.org.
February 2009 - Visit the Refurbished Dental Clinic
Made possible by grants from the HDA Dental Samaritans, McInerny Foundation, and the hard work of our staff and volunteers, we have restored the Battleship Missouri’s dental spaces to their appearance circa 1991, the period of time in which the USS Missouri participated in Operation Desert Storm.
In this issue’s Education Update, read more about how the dental spaces will be used as a venue for joint education programs on essential dental services and oral health among Hawaii’s children.
In recognition of National Children’s Dental Health Month in February, the Battleship Missouri Memorial will showcase these newly refurbished spaces for a limited time as part of the “Life at Sea” tour. This tour will run twice daily only in February. As part of the clinic’s restoration, we refurbished the dental office, X-ray facility, prosthetics lab, dental supply room, enlisted medical/dental berthing and two operatories to accurately portray the Dental Clinic’s operational environment.
In addition to featuring the dental clinic, the tour will visit other spaces that provide a glimpse into what it was like for sailors and Marines to live aboard the Mighty Mo. The tour will also make stops at the onboard berthing areas, post office, barbershop, mess decks and even the brig (part of life at least for some of the crew).
The Life at Sea tour is free for Friends of the Mighty Mo members, and $10 per person (after admission) for non-members.

September 2008 - Crew Member Donation
The Battleship Missouri Memorial was honored to accept a $5,000 donation from the USS Missouri (BB-63) Association, a group consisting of USS Missouri veterans from the historic battleship’s five decades of service, toward the creation of a Crew Members Museum Room.
The check was presented to representatives of the memorial at the USS Missouri (BB-63) Association’s 35th annual reunion, held from Aug. 28 to Sept. 1 in San Antonio. Nearly 60 former crewmembers attended the reunion.
“We are truly grateful to the members of the USS Missouri (BB-63) Association for their generosity as the memorial continues to refurbish their ship for future generations,” said Mike Weidenbach, curator of the Battleship Missouri Memorial. “Only through continued support can we share the legacy of this great ship and her former crew with future generations.
“This year’s reunion was significant for the absence of too many familiar faces. The crewmembers are the beating heart of the ship. Without the experiences and memories of each and every crewmember, there would be no human experience to give the ship meaning and significance.”
The theme of the Crew Members Museum Room will be the shared experience of the crews of USS Missouri during periods of dramatic historical events, such as Japan’s formal World War II surrender and other memorable periods throughout her history. It will document the daily shipboard routine, feelings of being away from home, and accounts of being a sailor aboard the Mighty Mo at sea.
The space is located on the second deck aft, adjacent to the crew’s mess decks. It is a 24-foot by 30-foot compartment containing a dozen display cases in which the personal memorabilia of former crewmembers will be highlighted along with selected video excerpts from our oral history collections.
“The Crew Members Museum Room is a special exhibit area of items from real crew members who served on the Mighty Mo,” said Sarah Tenney, the memorial’s vice president of development. “By creating a room in honor of her crew, the Battleship Missouri Memorial pays tribute to those who had a part in the history of the Missouri.”
August 2008 - Launch of Feasibility Study
Much has been accomplished over the past 10 years in the refurbishment of the Battleship
Missouri, opening more areas on the ship to visitor tours and education programs than ever before. However, caring for a six-decade-old, 887-foot steel battleship also means planning for the long-term maintenance needs that extend over generations.
All ships are subject to a host of challenges caused by the corrosive nature of the marine environment, continuous exposure to that environment and the general ravages of age. Entrusted with the care of America’s last battleship, we are choosing to act proactively and are finalizing a comprehensive maintenance and funding plan that takes into account the long-term needs of the ship and the best interests of staff, volunteers, partners and visitors. As part of this plan, we anticipate that the Missouri will be in drydock for no more than 60 to 90 days in the near future, and are working with the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard to establish an exact timeframe.
To support these industrial-level maintenance activities, we are forming a Feasibility Study Committee consisting of major donors, civic and corporate leaders in the community and other individuals whose involvement may have an impact on the implementation and fundraising for this monumental effort. In the process, we will gather impressions of our non-profit organization, the memorial and the feasibility of launching a major fundraising campaign in the current economic environment and with the resources available in Pearl Harbor.
As members, you will be kept abreast of these exciting developments. Please watch for updates in future issues of “Broadside.” In the meantime, the Battleship Missouri Memorial continues to welcome visitors as usual.

June 2008 - New Membership Video
The Development Department has a new Membership Recruitment Video starring some of our own. Toby Langcaon, a former crew member of the USS Missouri and now a tourguide, stars as the tour guide who helps Cameron Ames and Kaila Ompad, our neighborhood friends, learn why the Battleship Missouri is so special. Stopping by to lend Toby a hand is Nathan Krahn, from Security. Also, a special thanks to Jerry Saludez, Jim Neuman, and Eve Colton In for lending a hand with production. This video is an important tool in spreading the word about the importance of the Battleship Missouri and why we need to preserve her for future generations to come visit. You can help us out by sending the video link to your friends to view.

April 2008 - State Registration
An important part of our Annual Giving Program (those gifts that provide annual contribution revenue) is to reach out to previous, current, or prospective donors through our direct mail and membership renewal initiatives.
To request contributions, both by mail or email, our fundraising department must be compliant with the registration and solicitation requirements of each US state. Some states require notarized reports while others need both board member, staff, and volunteer signatures.
The following guidelines produced by the GivingUSA Foundation outlines the annual survey of what is required by each state. In some cases only an update document needs to be turned in. In other states, we must report the gifts generated from the state in a specific period, or get multiple documents notarized. Multiple roles from management, board of directors, and volunteers may be required depending upon each states requirements.l
Our committment to keep up our State Registration process up to date is one of the ways the Batteship Missouri Memorial is committed to insure a gift is accurately managed by our development and accounting staff.

January 2008 - Annual, Major Gift, and Planned Giving Programs
Here is a quick overview of the traditional fundraising revenue areas at the Battleship Missouri Memorial.
Annual Giving Programs — These program efforts generate recurring fundraising revenue. There are 4 annual giving revenue programs: Membership, Sponsorship, General Donations & Unsolicited fundraising. For example, our primary monthly membership activity this month is our annual Membership & Volunteer Appreciation Day, which includes exclusive tours and a recognition ceremony. We have also launched a new “Friends of the Mighty Mo” membership brochure, “Broadside” e-newsletter and communication network (which you are using now!). If you or your organization would like to consider sponsoring an activity in our 10 Year Anniversary calendar, please contact development@ussmissouri.org for an information packet.
Major Giving Programs — These program efforts generate one-time or significant impact fundraising revenue. There are 3 major gift revenue programs: Funding Priority Major Gifts, Grants, Government grants, and In-kind donations. This month is focusing on State of Hawaii legislative support with a bill requesting renovation needs, as well as a Grant-in-Aid application to support our “Mighty Mo Campus” and education department. We are visiting with past supporters and are excited to hear how individuals and companies are planning on contributing to the preservation and expansion of the Missouri and our educational programs this year.
Planned Giving Program – These program efforts generate promises for gifts in the future to the ship. For example estate gifts to honor the passing of a veteran. Currently we are developing a Bequest program, and are developing a volunteer group to expand our planned giving program efforts. Please contact us if you would like to participate!
December 2007 - Launch of Updates
Welcome to our inaugral edition of the Broadside e-newsletter. Each month we will aim to keep subscribers up to date. Here are four important updates as the past four months have brought many changes to the Battleship Missouri development department:
UMMA is not in an official capital campaign.
Many supporters are interested in what the focus will be, especially since the Honolulu Advertiser ran an article on the front page (PDF link) of the paper on September 30th, 2007. Although the article above was a good overview of maintenance issues, the ship is not sinking! Resolving the tilt or list on the ship is part of daily operations unlike future planning to address issues such as rust control, painting on the superstructure above the main deck, and replacing nearly 53,000 square feet of teak deck planking, and in the longer term, a re-coat the underwater portion of the hull, which could require drydocking. "It is critical that the public understands that we are only in our annual fund campaign at this time," shares Sarah Tenney, the Vice President of Development, "this is important as some of our loyal funding sources, such as foundation grants, may have grant requirements relaying campaign restrictions". UMMA has invited a vendor to provide a comprehensive assessment in November and December 2007 to help determine long term needs for an appropriate capital campaign readiness review.
New offices and new staff
The UMMA development department has a new home --- the chaplains office and staterooms on the Battleship Missouri. The move from the Navy Pass and ID office into the chaplin's office and stateroom and office staterooms on the ship gives a personal perspective of what crew members endured each day. Three new staff and have joined the development. See the press releases here...
