The front side of this unique coin is Japan’s Foreign Minister, Mamoru Shigemitsu, signing the Instrument of Surrender before Allied Forces, which formally ended WWII. Known as the “Mighty Mo,” the USS Missouri (BB-63) was the last of the great battleships to be completed by the U.S. Navy and received three battle stars during World War II and five during the Korean War. The historic battleship was transferred to the USS Missouri Memorial Association, a Hawai‘i-based non-profit organization, on May 4, 1998. It was gently guided and docked at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, on June 22 after a 2,300-mile voyage across the Pacific from Bremerton, Washington.
